‘H1Z1’ Boss Says ‘World of Warcraft’-Style MMOs ‘Are Over’

World of Warcraft is one of the most successful games of all time, breaking multiple gaming records throughout its ten years on the market. Blizzard’s iconic MMO has seen several updates since its release, including last year’s Warlords of Draenor, and has had a large impact on gaming and pop culture. Indeed, Blizzard’s influence has been so widespread that the Warcraft universe is even set to have a feature film adaptation with a cast including Dominic Cooper.

Occasionally, however, World of Warcraft feels like it is some distant fossil from the gaming past. With a gameplay style built around sessions that run for hours upon hours, multiplayer raids requiring strategic teamwork, and an extreme level of player dedication, Blizzard’s title seems like the antithesis of modern day gaming. After all, WoW is at the opposite end of the gaming spectrum to pick-up-and-play mobile titles and Modern Warfare-esque shooters.
According to another lead designer in the world of MMO games, current gaming trends are set to continue going against Blizzard’s gaming giant. John Smedley, president of H1Z1 developer Daybreak Game Company, has said that the era of World of Warcraft-style MMOs is now “over.” Smedley, who was speaking to GamesIndustry, instead believes that gamers are set to look towards games with shorter single session times.

The head of Daybreak Game Company, which was previously known as Sony Online Entertainment until the studio was sold off in February of this year, has put the change down to how much time users are willing to give to games. Smedley believes that H1Z1 is a “session-based online game” rather than a MMO, with a 45-minute long average playtime that suits the modern gamer more than the raids of World of Warcraft or Everquest. Smedley stated that developers “need to change with the times,” and that Daybreak is aiming to target a “broader array of games and gaming styles.”

Some MMO fans may raise their eyebrows at the idea that World of Warcraft and its contemporaries are outdated, however. World of Warcraft is still one of the most popular games on the market, with over 10 million users subscribed by the end of 2014. The game has so far resisted breaking from its business model, despite numerous competitor MMOs taking the route to free-to-play. World of Warcraft’s influence is still prevalent, too, with Bungie’s hit shooter Destiny hybridizing MMO and FPS, offering gamers group-based raids.

Nonetheless, there is undoubtedly a move towards shorter, sharper gameplay sessions, and Daybreak’s H1Z1 certainly has some strong figures to back up Smedley’s claims. The game launched into early access in January of this year, and has already sold 1 million copies before full release, in spite of a market already flooded with multiplayer zombie survival titles and criticism over the addition of pay-to-win microtransactions. It remains to be seen just how true Smedley’s predictions are, but for now it looks like both kinds of MMO can share the multiplayer scene.

Greece Could Be Banned By FIFA Over Government Soccer Violence Crackdown

FIFA’s bete noire is government interference. You can probably guess why. The Greek national federation could face an international ban, if the Greek government moves to crack down on soccer violence.

Proposed legislation would allow the government to impose fines on clubs for violent incidents, potentially up to $25m. It would also allow the government to postpone or cancel matches.

With descriptions like this from a Panathinaikos vs. Olympiakos match in February. It’s clear something needs to be done.

What we saw today, I had never imagined. I had never foreseen that, the moment the team stepped into the pitch, there would be a pitch invasion. And the objects, what can I say? Nails, rocks, bottles…this felt like the bombardment of Iraq,” Marinakis said after the game.

Expect FIFA and UEFA to come to some compromise before Greece is banned. It wouldn’t be an international tournament without Greece throttling three matches with its cynicism. Expect that compromise to contain hollow promises.

PSA: Xbox One’s First MMO, Neverwinter, Now Available

To date, Xbox One hasn’t been much of a platform for MMORPGs, but that changes today with the release of Neverwinter.

As announced last month, the Dungeons & Dragons MMO is now available for download on Xbox One. It’s a free-to-play game, meaning you can download it and check it out without having to pay a dime. It does, however, require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, although from now until Thursday, April 2, all Xbox Live members–including those with free Silver accounts–can play Neverwinter.

Neverwinter was originally released on PC back in 2013, but, being an MMO, it’s been routinely updated since then. GameSpot’s updated review from last year noted how it’s very possible to reach the level cap without having to spend real-world money.

The Xbox One version of Neverwinter has been updated to integrate with your Xbox Live friends list and support a controller-based interface. It includes all of the base game’s content, as well as that of the Tyranny of Dragons expansion.
Publisher Perfect World said last year that Neverwinter’s console release was “starting with Xbox One,” suggesting a PS4 version could be in the works.

If D&D isn’t your thing but you’re interested in playing a new MMO on current-gen consoles, The Elder Scrolls Online is coming to PS4 and Xbox One in June without a subscription fee.

In some pretty big news, the team of the week that is scheduled to come out within the next few hours may have just been leaked, and from what is seen here, it may be one of he best one’s in all of FIFA.

Off the bat the first thing I notice is that there is a 96 rated Cristiano Ronaldo in-form this week, definitely a card that was warranted considering he scored a whopping 5 goals. Another immediate shock and wow card I saw is that of Blaise Matuidi, who has his SIF card, which will probably be one of the best French midfielders outside of Pogba.

Then the striker is shown, and both of them will be extremely good, for starters you have 84 rated Hulk in-form, and it’s a position change as well since he’s gone from a RW to a striker in-form. He’s got a great card already, having him be a striker in a Brazilian squad is just too good. He will be one of the more coveted players this week simply because he’s a Brazilian striker with high pace and shooting.

After that, even some of the lower rated players look to be phenomenal. First one is Ricardo Rodriguez, who’s my favorite left-back over both Alaba and Alba in the game. His inform will be insane! Ricardo Quaresma and Ander Herrera will both have some tidy informs, and Quaresma will be underrated to many, he will be a cheap buy but will play like a dream, make sure to check him out.

Not sure how I feel about Jagielka and Mathieu in the team of the week, but Mathieu could be the hidden gem because he’ll have high pace with good defensive stats alongside being very tall, if you couldn’t afford IF Pique the other week, Mathieu is your guy for a tall solid CB. De Sanctis is alright, but isn’t one of my more reliable picks and will be the least coveted inform by far.

Good luck with packs this week! It’s going to be a good week!
